Why might you choose
to work by telephone?
- You
may feel shy or embarrassed about seeking a counselor. Perhaps if
you were not in a face-to-face situation, it
would be less threatening to you.
- You may prefer
the privacy and simplicity afforded by therapy at home or in your
office. It would be unlikely that you would knowingly encounter
your therapist in the path of your daily life.
- Savings on gasoline
and time for those who are more than 30 minutes from a traditional
counselor.
- Flexible Hours,
accommodating all US time zones.
- Three-way calling is
available if you wish to include someone else in your therapy.
- You
might be on vacation or an extended trip away from your home territory.
- Perhaps
you travel for a living and cannot manage the weekday hours of local
therapists.
- "One
hour" of phone therapy actually equals 60 minutes, rather than 45 as is
commonly interpreted by all insurance companies.
- The
first 30 minutes per phone is free, meant for the purpose of
determining counseling compatibility.
- Vivian
covers the cost for all long distance calls in the US.
Potential
disadvantages of telephone counseling
- Some need the
presence of the therapist for the visual feedback.
- Currently insurance
companies will not allow coverage for telephone counseling, even though
it is with a professionally credentialed therapist.
- A distance therapist
cannot be in the room with you during an emergency. However, a
distance counselor may be able to arrange for a quick telephone
appointment if you are struggling.
- This is not a
workable framework for children under the age of 16.
- Telephone consulting
is payable in advance of the appointment. You may choose to pay via
your credit card through the PayPal site (see pricing page). If
you prefer, you may send a check in advance to the office address (see contact Vivian).
- Cell phone use may
not be totally confidential.
